What Is a Good RTP for Slots? How to Read the Number

Return to Player (RTP) is the most quoted slot statistic, and also the most misunderstood. So what is a good RTP for slots, and how should you use it?

What RTP means

RTP is the theoretical percentage of all money wagered that a slot pays back over millions of spins. A 96% RTP slot is designed to return $96 for every $100 wagered in the very long run. The remaining 4% is the house edge.

What is a good RTP?

For online slots, many players consider around 96% to be an average benchmark. Games at 97% or higher are on the higher end, and titles below about 94% have a noticeably larger house edge. Land-based machines in US casinos often run lower than online slots. Progressive jackpot slots usually have a lower base RTP because part of each bet funds the jackpot.

Same game, different RTP

Many studios release one game with several RTP settings, for example 96%, 94%, and 92%. The operator chooses which one to offer. Always open the help or info screen in the specific casino to see the version you are playing.

RTP does not predict your session

RTP is measured over huge samples. In a single session, results can be far above or far below it. Volatility tells you more about how results are distributed, and hit frequency shows how often any win occurs.

How to use RTP sensibly

  • Compare RTP between similar games, not as a promise
  • Check whether bonus buy features carry a different RTP
  • Pair RTP with a firm session budget (bankroll guide)
  • Ignore myths about "due" or "hot" machines (slot myths)
